Research Station Up In Flames

Ylandoki - A science facility belonging to the Lai Dai Corporation was destroyed early this morning when its local safety systems failed to control a fire. The planet-bound base was successfully evacuated without casualties or major injuries. Despite attempts by emergency response teams to extinguish the flames, the facility could not be saved.

The fire is believed to have been ignited by an electrical problem, made worse by several automated fire response systems failing to engage. General warning systems remained functional, and the staff was able to follow their emergency plan and evacuate safely.

Local firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the first alarm and proceeded to contain the flames, but were unable to prevent the fire from spreading inside the facility. Several hundred of the facility's staff were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for first- and second-degree burns and smoke inhalation, but all of them are expected to make full recoveries.

"We will be launching an investigation into these events," says Eskki Dourhen, a member of Lai Dai's Internal Security division assigned to the facility. When asked by reporters from a local news agency, Mr. Dourhen said that Lai Dai "cannot ignore the possibility of sabotage", and that "measures must be taken to increase security and response times."

Lai Dai Conference Suffers Electromagnetic Attack

Kinakka - The Black Rise Development Conference was the target of a widespread electromagnetic pulse last night, causing a number of casualties and an estimated 1.4 million of ISK in damages. No fatalities have been reported, but the pulse caused unshielded cybernetic devices to fail, resulting in 23 individuals being sent to intensive care units and an additional 213 requiring extensive repairs to implants and prosthetics.

The source of the pulse has been traced to a number of synchronized warheads placed around the station, having been smuggled in by unknown means. In light of this breach of security, Lai Dai has suffered harsh criticism. "It's unforgivable to put so many people at risk," says Genkarhaadan Nineven, part of a group of visitors from the Sukuuvestaa Corporation. "Lai Dai promised us safety but completely failed to protect us from this. At least we can be thankful it was nothing even more dangerous."

The attack not only caused damage to cybernetic components, but also wiped numerous data networks on the station. Reports say that several laboratories and assembly arrays belonging to Lai Dai were put out of commission in the attack, including a catastrophic Planck bubble failure in one lab that was fortunately unmanned at the time of the attack.

In a statement, the Lai Dai Corporation said that service in rented laboratories or manufacturing arrays was not disrupted, and that any damages suffered by conference attendees will be reimbursed in full by the corporation while an investigation is launched.

Development Conference Attracts Pioneers, Public

Kinakka - The Lai Dai Corporation's Black Rise Development Conference opened its doors today, welcoming thousands of visitors to see several miles of booths displaying prototypes, technology demonstrations and grand plans.

Among the most popular displays were the Zero-G Research Firm's full-scale model of a next-generation orbital habitat - planned for prototype deployment before the end of the year - and a digital link to an experimental deadspace garden module by the Kaalakiota and Caldari Provisions.

The Lai Dai Corporation and its subsidiaries had a number of small displays of upcoming releases - among them a new series of low-maintenance atmospheric craft dubbed "Snipe", designed to be used by small colonies. In general, the Lai Dai presence has been small compared to other corporations, but rumors suggest that the megacorp is holding off on a big revelation.

"There has been talk for weeks of Lai Dai preparing something big. I've heard that their Storage Research team is here in Kinakka, ready to reveal a prototype," says Ulekkan Vindele, a hangar-floor manager for a capsuleer corporation. "Of what, I can't say."

Despite the mystery surrounding Lai Dai's own projects, it is clear that their goals for the conference are being met. Hundreds of projects opened their booths announcing that they were looking for investors, and within the end of the day the vast majority had secured the capital they needed to pursue their plans. "We are ecstatic," said Norona Caaspien, celebrating with her team in the back of a booth showcasing their starbase capacitor prototype. "We are so happy that someone would invest their time and money in our project, and that this conference made it possible for us to be seen."

Hyasyoda Executives Charged with Industrial Espionage

Suroken - The Internal Security division of the Corporate Police Force arrested and charged six executives from the Hyasyoda Corporation's Khanid Division. Missing Chief Sales Executive Attakaila Tatimon has been charged in his absence.

In a recent press conference, Pietsio Kallenenmen, public relations secretary for the CPF, revealed that "[The CPF] have detained these executives following a lengthy investigation into the recent underperformance in that region. These offenders have been involved in selling details to our rivals, including the prices of past and current contracts, details of our business contacts, and most importantly, the current tenders we have placed for contracts within the Kingdom."

Although the CPF did not disclose the recipients of this intelligence, CONCORD Security Exchange officials have hinted at Wiyrkomi. Independent trader Timo Surosen remarked, "It's pretty obvious who these guys were spying for. Just look at how much recent trade has gone Wiyrkomi's way in the Kingdom."

The CPF announced that they would be privately prosecuting the seven employees in order to limit the damage caused and recoup some costs. If found guilty under Hyasyoda Corporate Law, the employees have unlimited liability to pay back any damages, and could also face a custodial sentence. All seven suspects have worked for Hyasyoda for a minimum of twelve years.

Khanid Navy Announces Maintenance Contract

Khanid Prime - The Royal Khanid Navy, in conjunction with Wiyrkomi, announced a massive maintenance program for the upkeep of its fleet.

Under the terms of the contract, Wiyrkomi have been loaned a maintenance facility within the Royal Khanid Navy shipyards in Kihtaled. The contract has a fixed term of three years, with a possible rolling end-date should the contract be fulfilled to the Navy's satisfaction. Wiyrkomi are to take control of the scheduled maintenance of the Fusion Thruster components for all the Khanid Navy fleet.

The Khanid Navy hopes that this maintenance program will give their aging fleet greater serviceability figures at a lower price than keeping an internal maintenance facility.

Wiyrkomi played down the significance of this contract. according to a company spokesman, "This is standard maintenance practice in all modern fleet management models. It will allow our customer greater flexibility at a competitive price."

Poor Sales Reports for Hyasyoda, Executive Vanishes

Khanid Prime - Attakaila Tatimon, Chief Sales Executive for the Hyasyoda Corporation in the Khanid Region, has disappeared following the publication of poor quarterly figures.

Against a backdrop of good growth figures for the Caldari megacorporation, the Khanid Division has displayed a markedly underwhelming performance. While every other regional division's profits have grown by an average of five percent, including a remarkable sixteen percent growth in The Citadel division, Hyasyoda's share of the Khanid market has contracted by almost eighteen percent against the same period last year.

The Khanid market itself has flourished in the last six months. Market analysts point to the thawing relationship between the Kingdom and the Amarr Empire, as well as some sizable contracts that have recently been awarded to other Caldari corporations.

Tatimon was last seen the day before the figures were due to be published. A note was found on his desk implying that he felt responsible for the company's poor performance. Tatimon has been employed by Hyasyoda for over twenty years, rising from a junior executive in their Marketing Department to his present position.

Hyasyoda Headquarters in Suroken refused to comment on his disappearance.

Deep Core Mining Releases Strong Earnings Report

Paara -- Deep Core Mining Inc. announced their quarterly earnings this week, exceeding analyst expectations by nearly 10%. While many of the gains have been company-wide, as infrastructure investments facilitated by CAESA funds have finally begun paying dividends, the greatest improvements have been in their Tasen and Otawasa operations. The latter recently went through a significant reorganization after an accident at the Kaunokka III-1 facility several months ago, which many analysts believe contributed to the improvement.

According to the company's financial statements, worker productivity and actual production volume have both increased significantly since this time last year, and several new trading strategies have allowed the company to take better advantage of fluctuations in mineral prices. The company has also canceled plans for a new bond issue, which some investors had worried would be necessary after several quarters of painful losses.

At the Kaunokka III-1 facility, workers don't seem to be surprised by the report. "Workers here are much more productive and safety-conscious since the reorganization, and overall I think we're running a tight ship these days," said Reita Wotimi, the newly promoted chief technical officer at the mining outpost. "It's still dangerous work, but we're spending a lot less on sick leave these days."

Due to challenging environmental conditions, the Kaunokka strip mine is still a hazardous place. Last week, two workers suffered heavy injuries in a vehicle crash at one of the sites; however, both the miners and the medical officials agree that these are unavoidable. "That's why we get paid twice as much," said one of the injured workers. "All we asked for is for our bosses not to increase the level of danger any further by their actions. We're happy the new managers keep that in mind."

Lai Dai Announces Black Rise Development Conference

Kinakka - As another step towards the settlement and development of Black Rise - the region of space unveiled by the Caldari State just over a year ago - the Lai Dai Corporation has announced that it will be hosting a scientific conference in the Kinakka system.

The Black Rise Development Conference will open its doors in two weeks, with representatives from numerous corporations attending the station to display technological advances and participate in talks and Q&A sessions. Among those invited are the Wiyrkomi and Kaalakiota Corporations, both expected to hold displays of new planetary settlement equipment. Also expected to host displays are Ytiri, Top-Down, Propel Dynamics, Zero-G Research Firm and others.

"Some have called it a last-minute announcement," said Haalonen Ihoya, Chief Coordinator of the Lai Dai Corporation. "But in reality we have been planning this conference for some time. It was only lately that we deemed the situation in the region calm enough to open the doors to the public."

Several thousand public passes have reportedly been given to employees of the involved corporations. With so many flocking to a single station in low-security space, the question of security has been raised. "We look very seriously on matters of security, and we have made certain that several units of the Lai Dai Protection Service are available to ensure the safety of everyone on our station," Ihoya says.

In a press release, Lai Dai calls the conference a way to show that the Black Rise region will be an "opportunity for great return on investment", and to entice the settlement of the worlds of Black Rise by enterprising individuals.

The components are mainly deep space communications arrays and navigational computers for the aging Khanid Transport distribution fleet, expected to be used as a massive mid-life upgrade to Khanid Transportation’s infrastructure. This deal will allow the Khanid Prime-based company to trade more efficiently with the Amarr Empire.

Wiyrkomi has been steadily expanding their operations within the Khanid Kingdom over the last few months, and many business analysts view this contract as a major development in their foreign policy.

CBD Takes Drastic Steps in the Wake of Kaunokka Incident

Muvolailen - The CBD Corporation has announced a number of large-scale management changes at its subsidiaries, Deep Core Mining Inc. and Spacelane Patrol. Most experts are sure these steps are directly related to an incident at a DCMI moon mining facility in Kaunokka last month which claimed the lives of 25 workers, the aftermath of which was perceived as being very poorly handled, inciting criticism from the Caldari Providence Directorate among others.

Besides a number of middle-tier managers in the Kaunokka and Otasawa constellations, both the chief executive director and chief technical officer of the Kaunokka facility were fired. Deep Core Mining Inc.'s regional director in Otawasa was transferred to another position and reportedly suffered a hefty fine. According to some sources, the head of the investigation team at Spacelane Patrol was also sacked, although the corporation did not issue any statement on the matter.

Most of the positions were filled by CBD employees; however, Deep Core Mining Inc. has announced the appointment of Reita Wotimi, a spokeswoman for the DCMI workers at Kaunokka, to the position of chief technical officer at the moon mining station.

A source in DCMI who chose to remain anonymous says: "It was a bloodbath. CBD just stepped in and apparently decided to fire everyone who dealt with that strip mine - even the ones who could have had no relation to that incident whatsoever. I hear a lot of folks at Spacelane [Patrol] were kicked out too."

The experts believe this move to be a sign that CBD does not want to spoil its relationship with Tibus Heth's party. "It is clear the corporation intended to drop this matter quietly and did not expect that kind of public reaction," says Harod Keykko, a risk analyst at the State and Region Bank. "After Kajoinen's announcement, though, that was no longer an option."

Nonni -- The recently released Spacelane Patrol report on the accident at DCMI's Kaunnoka III-1 facility is "ridiculous," according to a highly placed aide to Provist Director Suvasemi Aikinen. Highly-placed sources within the Kaalakiota Corporation say that Illa Kajoien, head of the Caldari Providence Directorate's Reform Oversight Committee, gave the assessment at a dinner honoring wounded veterans yesterday. The Directorate and Kaalakiota are refusing to comment on his words, saying only that it was a social event and that Kajoien was not there in an official capacity.

According to the reports, Kajoien said "[the investigation] was ridiculous. It's an obvious attempt by CBD to point fingers anywhere but at themselves, and a pathetic one at that," going on to say that he has "seen better excuses from my six year old." As a former foreman on a DCMI asteroid mining operation Kajoien has been critical of DCMI's worker policies in the past, but many observers have commented that his off-the-cuff remarks are more than a little impolitic after CBD was one of the swing votes on the military reforms passed this summer, one of Kajoien's initiatives.

"Kajoien's direct manner is believed to be one of the reasons he was selected for his position," said Pekko Udinen, a professor of political and memetic science at the Science and Trade Institute. "If he's voicing these concerns, it's quite possible that the CPD might be considering their own investigation into the Kaunokka incident, which in turn could set up a confrontation between the Directorate and CBD. That would likely be costly to CBD, even if they are found not to be at fault."

'Inconclusive' Spacelane Patrol Report Incites Wide Criticism

Muvolailen - Spacelane Patrol, the security arm of the CBD Corporation, has published the results of its investigation into the Kaunokka incident, an explosion which took the lives of 25 workers last month. Although the report claims to have uncovered a number of irregularities related to DCMI safety regulations, worker conduct and equipment maintenance, the outcome is inconclusive at best.

"Investigation of the safety procedures at the Kaunokka III-1 strip mine belonging to Deep Core Mining Inc. has revealed numerous breaches of established protocol; however, there also were at least ten recorded cases of worker misconduct, any of which could have led to the incident," the report says.

"Additionally, most equipment was commissioned a long time ago and is in remarkably poor condition. The incident could have happened due to any combination of these factors, not excluding the possibility of industrial sabotage. Sadly, we have to point out the facility management's unwillingness to cooperate, which may also have had an impact on the proceedings."

"It is a pitiful excuse for an investigation," said Reita Wotimi, a representative of the DCMI miners in Kaunokka. "What it basically says is that our coworkers could have died for any reason, while clearly someone out there is responsible for this horrible incident."

Kauri Mulvolen, an analyst for Caldari Funds Unlimited, stated he thinks the investigation did more harm than good. "The vague and, frankly speaking, meaningless report underlines some deep management problems at DCMI. While some may argue that the incident in question was blown way out of proportion, the corporation could - and should - have handled it itself. Involvement of Spacelane Patrol brought it into national spotlight, and now they basically admit they don't know what happened. It is not a good sign for any investor."

Spacelane Patrol Launches Official Investigation Into Kaunokka Incident

Muvolailen - Spacelane Patrol, the security arm of the CBD Corporation, has launched an official investigation into the explosion which took place recently at Deep Core Mining's Kaunokka moon mining facility. The CBD Corporation is the majority shareholder of DCMI and as such is fully entitled to investigate the actions of its subsidiary, but pundits still believe the real reason for the investigation is the growing public attention toward the incident.

Meanwhile, the DCMI management in the Otasawa constellation has answered the appeal made by the workers. In what was seen as an uncharacteristically blunt statement, Worin Kauguro, the corporation's spokesman in Kaunokka, said, "We are saddened at these groundless accusations. Despite our best efforts to introduce measures aimed to increase efficiency and productivity, the recent performance of the facility suggests that some personnel do not take our best interests to heart. It is too early to say what exactly caused the incident, but worker carelessness is a likely explanation." He added that the corporation will consider any worker strikes or deliberate disruptions in regular operations a breach of contract and will impose stiff penalties on those found guilty.

At the same time, some sources claim the corporation had indeed been neglecting its moon strip mining. "The facilities similar to the Kaunokka one were mostly built a decade ago, and are nearing the end of their useful lives," says an industry expert who chose to remain anonymous. "They are not producing any rare resources, and substantial investments are required for their technological refitting. So it would make more sense to build new mining stations than to try and upgrade these ones. Even with the influx from CAESA, DCMI has better ways to spend its money."

Deep Core Mining Workers Blame 'Unbearable' Conditions, Strike Rumors Abound

Kaunokka - Just days after an incident at a Deep Core Mining moon facility in the Kaunokka system that claimed the lives of over twenty workers, several of the corporation's personnel have come forward to say that the strip mining facilities at the station were "a disaster waiting to happen." Calling upon the management to improve the working conditions as soon as possible, some miners went as far as to suggest the possibility of a strike if their demands are not met.

Reita Wotimi, a representative of the DCMI miners at the facility, urged the top management of Deep Core Mining Inc. to examine the situation and take appropriate measures. "We have always been proud of this facility and of what we achieved here, but in the last few months conditions here have become absolutely unbearable. The local management tried to ramp up the [mining] by more than half, paying no regard to our safety whatsoever. Now we have lost good friends because of their greed."

A worker who chose to remain anonymous stated that the blast was going to happen sooner or later: "The bigwigs just do not seem to care if we live or die as long we crank out the minerals, and it's getting worse every day. Personally, I am not going back there, and a lot of people are with me on this."

The corporation has not responded to the appeal s as of yet. Meanwhile, two more workers died in the intensive care facility today, bringing the total death toll to twenty -five.

Dozens of Workers Killed in Accident at Kaunokka Mining Facility

Kaunokka - A blast at a Deep Core Mining Inc. moon facility in Kaunokka has taken the lives of at least 23 workers, system authorities say. The cause of the accident is not yet clear, but the corporation says it was following all relevant industrial safety procedures.

According to preliminary reports, a gas pocket exploded somewhere under the facility, damaging one of the residential habitats. Most of the off-shift workers in the habitat were killed by the resulting decompression, save for a few who managed to get to their emergency spacesuits in time.

While industrial accidents are not uncommon in Caldari State, it is hard to estimate the exact loss of life per year, as record keepers do not generally publish that kind of information. Deep Core Mining representatives have issued a brief statement saying that the corporation "strictly adheres to all of the mining industry's standard safety procedures.'

Built 11 years ago, the facility at Kaunokka Planet III Moon I was the first moon station to utilize the mining drill technology patented by DCMI at that time.

Deep Core Mining Inc., a subsidiary of CBD Corporation, was one of the first beneficiaries of the Caldari-Amarr Economic Stimulus Agreement (CAESA), and has been stepping up production aggressively ever since.
