Prologue

Applause… there in the Grand Hall of the Military School there was thunderous applause from the thousands of attendees for the recent Valedictorian graduate. The tall thin man standing in front of his delighted superiors grinned widely thinking of the great accomplishment he had just achieved, and those yet to come. Valedictorian was a prestigious rank and with it came great benefits. The praise from teachers, officers, family, and fellow students alone was a sufficient incentive to overachieve, but there were other, more significant, benefits that awaited such a student. Implants were expensive commodities. More expensive then most could even hope to afford. A pilot’s implants were even more expensive than that. A student who excelled in his field in the Republic Military School and graduated with top honors might hope to garner enough influence to procure such things. Such were aspirations of Kada Ceebo. Valedictorian.

There was one in the audience who did not share in the goodwill of the school however. A jaded Brutor man who’s achievements had been passed over due to reasons beyond his control. Reasons the very core principles of the school should have made immaterial.

Spirit to fight for our heritage. Strength to cling to our values.

That passage of the school’s charter rolled over and over in the man’s head. Drowning out the speech Ceebo was making as the ceremony drew to a close. The man’s heart was beating slightly faster the normal as he tried to calm himself. His grades and scores were always on par with the best students in the school. His ranks and achievements numbered into the hundreds. He was in the top 3 percentile of the students for that cycle. And yet, there was only one Valedictorian. His thoughts turned to the obstacle that held him back for so many years. He knew he had gotten lucky to be where he was in the first place. Even though many of the Republic’s officer’s were Gallente trained and had diplomas from the Federal Navy Academy, all personnel were required to go through basics at the Republic’s own school. The entrance requirements were lax for basic training, and generally student’s moved from there to a Navy school somewhere. But to get the advanced courses needed for pilots in the RMS took an unusual aptitude. He knew he was destined to fly in space, and threw every ounce of hard work and sheer will he had in him into achieving that goal. Yet, standing right before him on the platform delivering the closing remarks for the cycle was the prize for all his efforts. Another man, Kada Ceebo was going to space. And it was all because of one thing. His heritage. His values.

Spirit to fight for our heritage.

This man was a social outcast. His father, being a former slave, was common enough. But his mother, was the daughter of an aide to an Amarrian Holder. She was a true Amarrian who freed a slave, married him and later escaped to Republic space. And though she turned her back on a life of comfort in Bashakru with the Empire, she and her husband never found a true home in the Republic territories either. This was his heritage. This was his curse. Always viewed as a half-breed, enduring insults all throughout childhood, this man could never shake the stigma of an “Amarr lover” or a “slaver’s son”. This was the sole reason he was passed over by the Republic’s eyes. The prejudice of his own people kept him from excelling. The man managed to calm himself as he shook the hand of his classmate Ceebo, and smiled at the euphoric Sebiestor. Thoughts began to form in his head about how he was going to get into space now. There were few options available for a man in his position. Leaving the Grand Hall, he pulled his sunglasses from a fold in his leather robes, put them on and took a moment to stare at the orange sky. Exhaling deeply, he started on the road home.

Home consisted of a small messy apartment that he shared with 2 other students. They were gone at the moment, no doubt at the only party on graduation night. It was common for the whole graduating class to celebrate at a local place together. However, he was too disgusted to celebrate anything at the moment. He went to his console and booted it up. His screen lit up with the familiar Rifter class frigate as its background. “Space will have to wait I guess”, he thought to himself. As he cleared the messages in his mailbox, he noticed one from a Scope reporter. Already? Man these guys are fast. Not too long ago, as a personal project, he had contacted a reporter to research family members he may have had in the Amarr Empire. He thought it would take some time given Amarr-Gallente relations, but apparently he was wrong. The message read:

Greetings Friend,
I have good news and bad. Which do you want to hear first? I’ll choose for you. The bad news is I have been assigned to a huge story covering the Assassination of Doriam II and will be unable to continue research for you… Well… I guess that’s good news for me, did I mention this story is HUGE. Anyway, onto your good news. I managed to uncover a little information about your family. Did you know you had a brother? You never mentioned him to me. Well, sorry if it’s old news, but it’s all I got. Ciao –
Laverous Euaux

P.S. I’m going to be really busy in the next couple months. Please don’t reply. Thank me later.

Momentarily stunned at the news, he read the message again. He was floored. All this time he never knew. His parents never mentioned a brother. There was never a record, or pictures, or anything that remotely hinted at his existence. He considered replying to the message, but then remembered his previous conversations with the reporter. She wasn’t altogether there in his opinion, but very focused. That’s how the Scope operated, always dedicated to its current story. He figured that his message would be deleted the instant it showed up in her inbox, massively overshadowed by the recent death of the Emperor, so he decided against replying. It was at this time however that he came to a stark realization… he NEEDED to get into space. Finding his brother, the only family he had left as this point, was a priority. He considered signing up for the Federal Navy Academy, but decided that it would take much too long to go through another 2 cycles of training. He was on a mission. And he needed to succeed NOW. But first he needed a plan. Subterfuge was never his strong point.

Strength to cling to our values.

After a few minutes of thought, he decided a direct approach would be best. He shut his console off and started out the door. He had a party to attend.

There was only one hangout that could be considered worthy of RMS graduates on a special event. He knew he would find his prey at The Rok’s Nest. It was one of the larger social hubs in the Payt District on Ammold, and tonight the party was rocking pretty hard. After all it wasn’t every day that a local attained the highest honor in the RMS ranks. Kada Ceebo was a celebrity now. He had come from an affluent and prominent family in the Sebiestor Tribe and was groomed for success. The man paused before entering the club and thought about the next few hours. They would be crucial to his “mission”. Again sporting his shades, he strolled in and began mingling as best he could. Slowly he worked his way through the crowd (as easily as a Brutor could), past the dancers, past the Clash tables, and towards his target. He was glad Ceebo’s family was not there to see what was about to happen. Generally family members were not present for the initial celebration, though they usually held a secondary party later where only family and close friends were invited. He spotted Ceebo at the bar talking with some other students.

“Congratulations Kada”, he said “Looks like you’re going into space after all”

“Thanks, Thanks a lot, I owe my success to a lot of people”, Kada replied, as he sipped his drink. “I just got my papers authorizing my appointment in the Military, and you know what that means!”

I know what that means… it means you’re gonna steal my dream right in front of me.
“Really? Shouldn’t you be signing those and getting them back to Registration?”

“Oh it’s alright, I’ll handle it first thing in the morning. I have some serious work that demands my immediate attention right now”, he said, holding up the glass in his hand.

Violence with all these people around won’t do me any good. What to do…
“Let me cut to the chase. I need those papers.”

“WHAT?”

“Listen. I’m challenging your right to that authorization. We both know I was the better student anyway.”

“Man you must have some stones to say something like that! You think you can just come in here and...”

“Listen Kada, if anyone deserves to be furious here it’s ME. You know it just as well as I do. The only reason I’m not standing where you are now is because of my history. My parents struggled harder then anyone I know to make their relationship work with both sides breathing threat and murder at them for what they stood for. And I’ve been held back for that same reason. I’m challenging your right to the title of Valedictorian and the right to vindicate my family name!”

By now the room had all but gone silent, and all eyes were on the two. On the one side stood the Brutor, struggling to keep his hands from shaking with all the anger from over the years. On the other side stood the Sebiestor, seething with rage and incredulous that someone had challenged his position.

“FINE! If you’re so convinced that you’re smarter then me, then we’ll have battle of wits.”, Ceebo, shouted. He was never one to back down from a challenge. Kada stormed over to the Mind Clash table and threw his blank authorization papers down in the middle. By now whispers and murmuring were the only noises that could be heard as both participants took their seats at the table. Each locked their headsets into place and the machine booted up. The match was switched to broadcast on the Club’s various monitors. Both men had a determined look as if their lives were on the line. In a way, they were right. Both had much to lose. The consequences of this match would be grave for the loser.

This is going to get nasty…

Kada’s hologram displayed above the table. it resembled a large dragon-like creature with several limbs. His opponent’s hologram was a smaller armored humanoid figure with a blade on each arm. Both squared off and sized the other up for at least a half a minute. Then the clash…

Kada was an avid player of the game and started first. The dragon lunged forward and struck full force, throwing his opponent across the virtual arena. Kada grinned and pressed the attack. His opponent recovered and kicked off the wall, dashing full speed at the dragon. Both met near the center of the arena and the dragon lashed out again with a vicious claw. Narrowly dodging the strike the humanoid dug his blade into the dragon’s right leg. Reacting violently, the dragon slammed the humanoid’s shoulder with its right hand. The humanoid was again thrown near the edge of the arena, his left shoulder shattered under the blow. Kada smirked wickedly at his opponent who had slumped in his chair from the blow. The mental strain on the combatants was amplified by the tension in the air and the risk associated with the battle. Picking himself up at the same time his hologram did, the Brutor tried to steady his nerves and pressed the assault again. This time as he approached, the crowd cheered as the dragon lunged forward again. The humanoid spun its body and deflected blow sending the dragon’s arm flailing past him. Seeing the opportunity it continued the spin and brought a blade down on its opponent’s outstretched arm. Blade met arm and severed it cleanly. Kada’s right eye slammed shut out of reflex and sweat started pouring off his brow. The dragon recoiled and backed off for a moment. The humanoid pushed the advantage and charged his target again.

Kada let out a battle cry and his hologram charged forward again, despite his damage. Catching his opponent off guard the dragon lunged and caught his opponent in its jaws. The pain in the Brutor’s head from the match was excruciating causing a small blackout. He awoke a few seconds later and found his hands raised themselves to claw the headgear off and stop the anguish, but he fought them back and grabbed hold of the sides of the table squeezing as hard as he could to make sure they didn’t move. He looked around the room for a second. The onlookers were exchanging bets and cheering. This is no time for distractions… distractions will kill me. Glancing up at the screen, he could see his hologram suspended in midair by Kada’s dragon shaking back and forth. Then he saw it. Through the immense mental strain he saw an opportunity. The dragon was biting through his hologram’s midsection, but his limbs were still hanging free. Kada was ready to make the killing blow and the dragon grabbed its opponent by the legs and head to rip it in half and end the match, when the arm of the battered hologram reached out and sliced a clean hole through the dragon’s throat and out the other side. It was over. The crowd went silent as the final picture from the match froze on the screen. Both combatants were sweating buckets and twitching randomly. No one said a word as the Brutor rose to his wobbling legs and made his way to the center of the table to claim his prize. Ceebo, sat in his chair, tears welling up in his eyes. Alcohol had gotten the better of him, and the reality of the situation sunk in. He had just gambled with his future… and lost.

The next day was a blur. Negotiating with Ceebo’s grandfather had been a difficult ordeal. Ye’ech Ceebo was a shrewd businessman, but getting his grandson into the Republic Fleet was worth any price to him. Through selling the Military papers back to the Ceebo family, the triumphant Brutor had secured enough funds to start a new life. After getting the required implants for pilots, he purchased a Reaper class vessel and came to claim it at the spaceport in Ammold. The dock manager greeted him with a smile.
“Hello there pal. First time up there?”

“Yeah, how can you tell?”

“Well, capsuleers usually don’t come planetside very much. Too busy playing god up there. Anyways, lets get you registered and get you on your way. I’m sure you have some “divine” plans of your own to get to.”

“Not really… I just want to find my brother.”

“Hehe, nice. So what’s your name, son?” the dock hand said as he handed the man a datapad and a syringe. “My name? Wasn’t it on the manifest for my ship’s supplies?”
“Well, ya your real name was. But none of you guys go by your birth name right?”
“I don’t see why not.”

“Well, suit yourself. Just enter your name in that pad and give me a blood sample to finish your registration.”

“Fingerprints won’t do? What about a retinal scan?”

“They don’t mean a thing. DNA is the only semi-constant to capsuleers, so it’s the most reliable ID you got. Hurry it up though, I got business to take care of.”

After handing back the sample and the datapad, the Brutor boarded his ship and went through the rest of the orientation. “The rest of my life in an egg”, he thought to himself as he plugged himself into his capsule.

“Ok, one last thing” , the dock manager said, “You’re pods internal computer will automatically interface with your ship and display a sensor signature based on your current affiliation. If other capsuleers want to look you up, they use the signature and run your info through the network Concord has set up and they can find out how long you’ve been in space based on your affiliations. It’s a good thing to know because you can do the same. It helps when you need to identify potential threats. Alright Mate. You’re set to go. You’re autopilot is set to dock at the Republic’s station in orbit by one of the moons. Once there you’ll probably go through some automated tutorial. Try to stay awake”

The dock manager exited the hangar and watched as the reaper lifted off and took to the skies never to return. “Another day…another ascension”, he sighed. “You better remember me if you make it big.. whatever your name was”, he looked at the datapad and chuckled to himself as he walked away… “Funny name….Falcione…”

Good story, I don't envy you though, having to find your brother in the vast dimensions of space. Any sign of him in the Metropolis region? Good luck.
