It's about time Eve caught up and integrated the story into the game better. Eve has been extremely poor at this and way behind the times. The only thing I miss from the other Space MMO's is how good the story was integrated into the game. If Eve at long last gets that right, it's time to celebrate.

Sounds all great and promising, especially the incorporation from storyline news into missions!

Also the update on Evelopedia sounds great, do we have a link available for the Evelopedia section?

Cleaning up old canon stories is always a pain and not easy at all, it is quite difficult. Good luck there!

I just hope that it will work out well in the end - having seen many great ideas from CCP for Eve by now which were started with great enthusiasm and implemented as "first steps" but then a second step never followed so that we have now all sort of unfinished stuff there (alliance management, sov management, moon mining/alchemy, factional warfare etc.). I hope these new ideas won't go the same way.

The Evelopedia section is linked on the homepage, but it's also over here.

It'll be great to see ingame events documented better and hopefully to see more players stepping up to help write the account of life in EVE. Good to see that more attention is being paid to the inconsistencies in the backstories!

Speaking of alliance happenings, beginning in June we're going to start publishing a briefing every two weeks that we call CORPS: CONCORD Outer Region Political Summary.

I hope this two-weekly will be more two-weekly then our quarterly economic newsletter has been quarterly, because then we might only get updates every 4 months if we're lucky. Sorry for being very skeptical, but there is every reason to be.

Is this CORPS feature designed as an eventual replacement to ISD correspondence?

I do hope that the answer is yes because ISD correspondence is nothing but trouble. It is simply a tool for metagamers to fight their wars of words and spread their lies. And when you do eventually remove this cancerous section of the ISD don't bother replacing it. Instead invest the money in something more useful... anything.

Being honest, I haven't been a fan of a lot of what Tony G has done. I feel he sacrifices a lot of the feel of Eve in his work and resorts to silly, space-opera-esque plot devices. Some of his other work shows a disturbing lack of familiarity with the background material, and in fact a number of the major inconsistencies that now need fixing were actually introduced by him. (As an example, the Scorpion has, since the beginning of the game, been the newest Caldari battleship, unless you read Ruthless Rolling Eyes.) I could - and have in other venues - go on a long rant about all of this.

That being said though, I'm glad someone in finally making the effort to clean up the inconsistencies. I realize backstory is often not the highest on the list, seeing as the people it affects the most are RPers, and we are a vanishingly small minority. I'm grateful that CCP and indeed, even Tony (and those who know my feelings about the backstory and EA in particular, will know how unlikely me thanking Mr Gonzalez is) are taking the time to work on this. However much I disagree with the way you have handled things - and by 'things' I mean plots, characters, and the story line of Eve Wink - at least you are finally doing something.

I'm interested, however, in how they are going to make choices in terms of which side of a given conflict will be the 'correct' side? In the Scorpion/Raven example, the canon about the Scorpion came first, and makes more sense. However the Raven part was actually written by Tony G. So which would be enthroned and which changed?

This is an excellent idea because I enjoy reading science fiction - I get through a novel a week.

I like the idea of reading 'intelligence reports'! It will give me a much better idea of what's going on out there in other parts of deep space - 0.0

Glad to hear these mistakes are starting to be cleared up.

Too bad about the whining about IC in this thread, though. It's an impossible task to create a fully impartial news service of any kind; in the real world or in a game world. Your personal perception of a situation can deny a lot of facts. Give the people behind it some slack, or start your own player-run news service.

CORPS sounds really interesting. Smaller merc corps and alliances could use it to more effectively offer their services. Corps could use it to pick what side they want to join.

I have always wanted to see more player-driven content, especially in politics.

This will be an amazing thing if you can get it right, and I wish you a lot of luck because I suspect you'll need it. Please, please make sure you get absolutely the right people doing it, don't cut corners or underestimate the difficulty of doing it well. Be prepared to accept a lot of criticism from the playerbase and treat it constructively (even from the *******s) without getting defensive and demoralised. It'll really lift the profile of the 0.0 game, and EVE itself, if you can make it succeed long term and become a truly established part of EVE, so keep that goal in mind.

My advice: make these reports as automated as possible. Thus neutrality will be guaranteed.

Look at the influence map. Before the automated influece map was available we had several 'political maps' around and each were discussed with heat and everyone picked just the map which supported their point of view and yelled at the others. Gladly the automated map solved that. Same thing (the yelling) happens with battle reports at the moment. And same thing will happen with these CORPS reports also if they arent generated automatically - you do not need to be an geniious to predict that.

If necessary, delay the CORPS until you have such an mechanism. Especially good would be to have not just a list translated into some words but also some clever algorithms which detects hot spots and war fronts, ideal would be also references to past events (like recapturing an earlier lost system/constellation).

Please think about such an automated report system instead of manual reports.

This, so much. The manual RP fluff on top will be really nice but if you can abuse the EVE API or whatever to ensure as much as possible of the facts are automated then it'll be a true winner.

At the top of the list of stuff that needs retconning out are the Endehuanni and Dark Jovians. EVE has a much more mature story than the "big conspiracy that controls it all". Darkness in the world comes from normal people doing their normal things with their understandable desires that interacts in unexpected ways with each other and creates a world where there is no "good" and "evil", but only shades of (dark) grey.

Likewise, please do not give too many "facts" about the history of EVE. A universe feels much more "alive" if the various factions have slightly different views of what actually happened before, and there is no "true" and "right" view of the world. Obviously, that does not apply to current every-day things.

Otherwise, I'm looking forward to the streamlining of the backstory - there have been a few things that are just inconsistent. Also, some of the technobabble to explain game mechanics are rather weird (camera drones, say) and could reworking a bit, too.

As a suggestion, I think it would be a good idea to have a regular (monthly? quarterly?) "question session" where some backstory guy answers a number of questions about "common sense" things - like, "how long does it take to visit a planet if you are on a station", "how much crew do I have on my ship at least to make it useful", and such. Everyday knowledge that just isn't detailed anywhere.

Thanks!

It annoys my that CCPs focus yet again is solely on 0.0 alliance gameplay.
That both internally and in the media CCP pushes large gang/fleet warfare and alliance mechanics.

A large portion of the populace are involved in alliance warfare, but a large portion of the populace is also NOT involved in 0.0 politics.

I`d like to be here the day CCP gives attention to low-sec small-gang/small corp dwellers. Some improvements were made to low-sec in the last patch, but the overall policy of CCP is still to obstruct solo and small gang mechanics.

I`ve been here since 2003- doing solo and small gang warfare. While some might disagree with me, there are few players who can match the history bhind my perspective.

I do realize it`s a difficult balance. Make small and solo play more viable and you risk overpowering larger gangs- like with nanos. But still, i do hope CCP have a couple of monkeys in the basement cooking up something interesting. It`s getting increasingly annoying that small/solo gameplay gets ever tougher, while big corps and especially 0.0 alliances get all the benefits of CCPs marketing needs.

Will I get to know what happened to the event I was in back in 2006?

I did exactly what the RP guy told me (put stuff on contract to him) but he said "I don't see it" and logged off... Sad

I am glad and annoyed at the same time by this news.

I am glad as it will hopefully stop the pointing out of single lines in long dead stories being used to define the universe

I am annoyed cos it makes my task of writting harder as I will have to learn the modifed histories.

I am happy that there will be "patch notes" of the changes. I do have one suggestion. Rather then dumping completely the non cannon stuff, how about turning them in to myth stories. So they are still within the universe and the history but modified to be like the Greek myth. Myths tell us as much about our world as real stories. So long as they are clearly marked, I don't see that as a problem
