Apart from developers it's usually some friends and family who are testing the first builds.

Those are some very interesting screenshots. Some concepts looks like they were straight out scrapped and the game was changed drastically multiple times. I am surprised no one broke off and tried to make a different version of eve at some point.

*edit* Would love to hear a "How EVE was made" series of dev blogs from the original devs at some point. Looks like an interesting process *edit*

Those screenshots are cool. The advancement from 2000-2001 is amazing.
