Edited by: Hulredi on 21/06/2005 16:10:07Edited by: Hulredi on 21/06/2005 16:07:05OK this is been kinda driving me nuts so I thought I would post a few recommendations on how to avoid ore thieves. - Use bookmarks- this is key to reducing the amount of ore that will get stolen if an ore thief is after your ore.
a) insta docks b) insta pick-ups
ParMizaN said: Dont mine at the warp in point This comment fits here.
- Keep an eye on local and if you notice ore thieves in local start hauling out your stuff.
a) Every ore thief you find add them to your addressbook and when you see green in local you dont know pack it in and go do something else. b) Set ore thieves to -10 standing so they appear as red when you see them in the system. c) I recommend blocking them as sometimes (not always) ore thieves love to smacktalk.
- Move to quieter systems. Not only will you avoid ore thieves you will also get better results in your mining. There is over 6000 systems in EVE I am sure you can find a fairly secure system that is 2-3 jumps off the highways and away from the thieves.
- ) Work with others and have them hauling your ore as you are mining.
- OffBeaT said: ...rename cans...
for example: Asteroid (Kernite), Giant Secure Container, Santa Claus (a persons name)
- Read posts like this http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=186009
that tell you what tactics ore thieves are using and figure out ways to counter their tactics.
- ParMizaN said: mine into a secure can if you want.
- ParMizaN said:If you are using an alt for hauling why not just have him sit next to the can and return when its full.
I dont totally agree with this as it promotes macroing and you can get both your caracters ganked by a suicide group. I have posted it here as it is a tactic that can be used to avoid ore thieves.
- ParMizaN said:Dont always mine in the top belt: if you mine in, for example, belt 10, you will have more time to haul if you see a thief in local before he finds your can.
I approve of this as it does work but not all ore thieves go from top to bottom when seaching for victims.
- ParMizaN said: dont afk mine.
This is a pretty obvious comment but I guess some are still not getting it so it has to be said.
- Maxine Stirner said: Drones. Lots of them.
Drones can hangup an industrial like nothing else. Many ore theives fit MWD in order to counter this, but only advanced industrials can even fit MWD.
Plus you can ram people. Don't do this if you have the drones though.. keep at drone orbit range.
Be sure to turn off your own drones if they are making life difficult for non-ore absconders because even though they are your friends now, they might not want to be later if you keep annoying them with drones smacking into their hull.
- Rastilin said: make a bunch of false cans around the one your mining into say like 10 and put 1unit of ore in each or whatever you fancy. That will deter a ore thief cause who wants to spend there time looting cans with 1 unit of ore.
- babylonstew said tank a rat spawn in 0.5 to 0.7 while mining, if orethief approaches when he is within 5k, warp out
I have never personally tried this one but I beleive it also starts something called chaining and you earn more in isk as well, but to quote me on that I have just read about it as well. :D
- PsyBoRG said dont timestamp your cans as that is want some ore thieves look for.
Keep track of it some other way like tags that only the gang can see.
OffBeaT Thanks for the input. ParMizaN Thanks for the input. Maxine Stirner Thanks for the input. Rastiln Thanks for the input. babylonstew for the input. Eris Thanks for the sticky I will do my best. Ok I have had a few people say dont mine into jet cans, but with the new barges this is difficult to do, so that is why I have put together this information for the public in order to do it as safely as possible. I in no way endore or condemm ore thieves as it is considered a occupation. I thought I would post this for people to consider and read. Cheers, |

Nice common sense tactics.
If everybody did this it would cut the cries of "omg thiefz0r" in local. |

How about just not using jetcans?
Also, ore thieves nearly never smack. I personally have never seen an ore thief smack in my life. Its always the miners, not the thieves, who smack and complain. |

I stumbled across a system that is virtually deserted. It is just 1 hop from a system with a processing plant, and 2 hops to one with a factory. Also, it is rich in kernite, pyroxeres, scordite and veldspar. And it's mine! All MINE!!!!!!
I rapidly fill jetcan after jetcan. I use an Apoc with 8 MDC 2s. What rats there are are weak and pathetic. My drones take them out quickly. To make things sweeter, my partner (it's HIS too) uses a Tempest with 6 MDC 2s, and 2 heavy missle banks. In a few days, he will be in a Megathron with 8 miners. When that happens he will also use drones against the rats.
I think if I can do this anyone can do this. Also, my buddy keeps an Iteron V parked in a safe spot. If anyone should show up (which has happened once), he flies to the hauler and comes back for the ore. Of course we use bookmarks. ...and have never lost an isk to thieves, working this way.
This is not a unique system. In my travels I've found others that fit the discription. I found one with tons of jaspet. Just thought I'd share.

hehe.. i use too rename my cans in the past so they said the same thing that my locked can's said next too them. most ore theifs are noobs and they see the real cans but think they where all the same cans. it actully worked better then i thought it would. |

Oops! My mistake, sorry for the confusion... I checked the megathron and to my disappointment it has only 7 turrets, and one additional hi-slot. I am nt sure now whether it is worth switching from a Tempest to a Mega for one additional mining laser...

Wow, very constructive post about oretheft and ways to prevent it. You sir, get a temporary sticky for it. I hope you will continue to update it and i'll try to keep the flames away.
If you disagree with this decision you can mail mods@ccpgames.com Posting you do not like this sticky can get you warned. Flaming and unconstructive comments will be removed and may be warned for as well. |

Edited by: ParMizaN on 08/06/2005 16:31:11Nice guide hulredi: maybe a few more tips: obviously: mine into a secure can if you want. If you are using an alt for hauling why not just have him sit next to the can and return when its full Perhaps name your ship something harder to recognise on scanner? Dont always mine in the top belt: if you mine in, for example, belt 10, you will have more time to haul if you see a thief in local before he finds your can. Dont mine at the warp in point: this could also save you from a suicide alt. And of course: dont go afk if you can help it edit: that sig makes me jealous every time eris |

Edited by: Maxine Stirner on 09/06/2005 09:00:42 Since you've already got the tip to stay out of the bigger highways or market hubs..
Here's another tip: Drones.
Ore Absconders are just a penalty for operating industrial equipment, productive property, and the means of production in controlled and patrolled space. Follow your wallet. Use your influence with legitimate authorities to oil the gears of your transition. They'll give way eventually with enough pressure applied.

While I agree with the first statement, if you have never heard a can raider smack talk, you have never met Boogereater, Ryctor, Big Doggy, Ashley Sky, and 1 or 2 others that I have run across. Back on topic though, avoiding strangers is a good way to avoid ore theives, but dont assume that someone really is an ore theif just because another someone told you so. Many ore theives like to cast suspiscion on innocent players so that they, themselves, can avoid suspiscion. On more than one occasion Ryctor has accused me of being an ore theif. And seeing my secrating and 5mil bounty I proudly wear for having podded Big Doggy in Jita; people who dont know me assume he is telling them the truth...until he takes their ore and/or they read my bio. |

Mine with a partner or two or three.
instead of having three people mine in to jet can the three of them can for a gang, where two continue to mine and the third starts hauling.
forming a gang have more advantages then drawbacks, in fact the only drawback having to share your ore with someone else at the end of the day is a lone compensated by the fact your lasers will be active the time it would take you to jump back change ship and haul for yourself.
And theft is not an issue if there is nothing to steal, they might come once or twice, but the third time they will ignore you mining and regard you for bad buisness and move on.

I got nabbed by megabond tonight. BTW, since this guy is so clearly an alt, I would gladly pay a reasonable amount to find out who his main is. |

very nice guide there i was kinda wondering can u anchor a giant secure can in high sec thought that was impossible and if it is impossible then its very pointless to use them as any one can open them if unanchored or simply just scoop them up |

That depends on what you call high sec. They cannot be anchored in 0.8 and up, but they can in 0.7 and below, so if you consider 0.5 and up high sec the answer is "sometimes". |

tank a rat spawn in 0.5 to 0.7 while mining, if orethief approaches when he is within 5k, warp out let him play with the rats for a bit and earn his stolen ore not a garrunteed tactic, but is fun none the less |

My IT3 does a total of about 120 damage with its smartbombs and has an AB. Burn for the can, if an NPC gets in range, BOOM BOOM BOOM. For the cruiser, shield rechargers 4tw. |

Very nice post, and some very good ideas. I mine in my Retriever, and instas are a very good idea when mining/hauling alone. From my experience, most ore thieves tend to stay around 1.0-0.8 since most are n00bs. So, I just go to a 0.6 system or so and use my drones to fight off the rats. 8 light drones work great. |
