I allways thought it owuld be a cool idea to have a section called "Ask a Dev" mabye thats just me. Anywho on to the point...

I have a question. This is not a flame question complaining about lag or something. I personally think the game runs fine but then again I dont goto Jita.

What kind of hardware/servers does Eve run on? Whats behind the doors? Whats this big clusters of servers made of that hosts our world?

Ok, who let Samirol into the server room? Looks like we need to update the security a bit! Very Happy

On a more serious note, Oveur wrote a Dev Blog a number of months back that went into some detail about the hardware. Check it out here.

Ok, I want to know if its true that you guys used the number 42 as a seed in the universe creation algorithm, and if that was the first and only number you tried?

Thanks. :)

Oh oh Did the guy creating the plant textures die after makeing the 1st 5 or was he fired ? (j/k)

on a more serious note. Will the test server ever be "all skilled" so the people without the ability to fly dreads //carriers or race ships, be able to test them out?
I've trained BS5 on the test server twice now, and it's really starting to bug me.

That's easy to answer, no. They've never done this, and I don't think they will.

The only time they've given everyone full skills was the final day of Beta, Armageddon Day, and it ended in a spectacular node crash that took down the whole cluster Very Happy

It wasn't at first, but someone... someone that has a thing with math, thought it was a fun idea. They reseeded the whole universe 2 days or so before going gold, it was done barely in time... ( details are itchy, but it was something like that. )

Just a suggestion but...
Ultima Online does a thing they call "five on friday" wherein a representitive for EA answers 5 questions submitted from the community. Perhaps CCP could do a similar thing? :)

LeKjart said during his presentation at the first Fanfest that 42 was the number used to seed Tranquility. Eight hours later, Tranquility was created, populated with objects and NPCs, then went live to the public shortly thereafter.

Yes, it is the only number used to seed TQ for launch. I would guess other seed numbers were used in the different beta phases.

Its pretty damn cool that you used that number to create the universe... I assume its from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, anything else would just be too much of a coincidence. :)

To everybody else - go read the book. :) The movie was OK, but the book is better. :)

Ok, yes, understand that reference...

What I wanted to know is how did CCP use this in seeding? Seeding what exactly?

I never did read that book or see any movie...

How do you generate 5000 star systems with different numbers of planets, moons, asteroid belts, variations in the ore, different stations, services in stations, and stargates connecting all of these?

Procedural generation of the solar systems is what they mean by "seeding" in this case.

The generator is programed with a series of paramaters and given a "seed" to start working from. The seed can usually be anything. A number, or in some cases a word or phrase.
In this case, ccp used the number 42 as the seed in a mildly ironic twist of fate. 42 being the answer to "life, the universe and everything" and also being used to create the universe and "everything".
