This guide will try to prevent the complications before you patch your client.
It will go trough the basics to minimise patching transition & losses and serve as an reminder for basics steps to take.
backing up your filesVery important part and the start of this small guide is makeing an backup of your settings so incase they are deleted / removed you can restore them easely.
You will need an archiving program like
winzip or
winrar.
First thing you have to do is find where you have your eve cached files.
Note that some of these directory's might be hidden, they can be made visible by going to "tools" then clicking folder options.
Now go to the tab view and look for the entry "hidden files and folders".
Enable the option "show hidden files and folders" and click apply (note you may need to refresh your explorer window to show these changes).
Depending on how you have configured your eve client your cache files are either in the cache folder where you installed your eve client (if you use the /end /LUA:OFF switch) or in the following location:
C:\Documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\ccp\eve\
If you are not useing the /end /LUA:OFF switch to force the cached files back to the eve installation folder then you can backup all your settings by backing up the settings folder.
If you have your cache inside the client directory you will need to backup the settings folder and the file prefs.ini
The best way to backup these files easely is by selecting the file / folder and right click on them and choose for the option "archive as ...".
Rename the resulting file eventually for an more logical name like eve cache backup <date> <character> (character incase you have more then 1 client / accounts), also don't forget to eventually move this backup to an easy to remember location if needed.
This way you can keep your usual settings backed up and replace them if they get erased by a new patch deployment.
When does backing up my files not workObviously sometimes no matter what you do the settings are erased and even when you put back an backup it wont accept it and not restore your original settings.
This sometimes happens if the format chnages of the files contained within your settings backups and there was no patcher to make the new format compatible trough migrateing your old settings.
This is unfortunately something that is out of our control and depends solely on how the eve client will manage it (wipeing the file or migrateing the settings to the new format).
Note for people useing the /end /LUA:OFF switchWhen the pathing is done do NOT click launch eve because it will start up the client useing the C:\Documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\ccp\eve\ location instead.
