Kittamaru < That may be for you but I have now reproduced this on 2 Windows XP SP2 machines. Please see my post as there may be other reasons you wher enot effected. This issue CAN AND DOES effect Windows XP SP2. |

Hmmm. I wonder if my machine will be affected. I run as a limited user so it's a possibility that I might be protected. OTOH the upgrade did require me to run it as an admin account so probably not. Shouldn't be too hard to fix but seriously CCP - wtf? How in hell does upgrading a game client end up trashing boot.ini? |

well, when will people learn that an imagefile of the system partition is essential, every little program or installation can screw your system. Murphy bites you someday, you cannot hide. but nevertheless i would say, that this should cost ccp at least one free t2 bpo for all  |

I have a Dell laptop and I've been trying to get mine to check clear from msconfig boot.ini screen but it would keep saying the last line was bad. Then I seen you post and bam it checks fine now. Yep, duh, Dell has that hidden diag partition on it so its the number one partition and windows is on the second.

Considering I tried it on a second PC, and my corpmates have tried this, I can safely give this a 100% YES SP2 fixes this problem.
And yes, it was a simple typo... how I don't know. This didn't happen on SiSi...
My laptop booted from the backup I'm assuming, since there's no boot.ini but it worked fine. My PC didn't HAVE a backup, so instead of taking the chance, I made a new boot.ini and it's currently booting up fine. |

Here my two cents to verify your boot.ini file is there.
Open a Command Prompt:
Start > Run
Enter "cmd" (no quotes)
Click OK
Enter: "dir C:\ /A:H" No quotes this will list the hidden files at C:\. Look for boot.ini. if it is missing or has a value of 0 next to it you have a problem.
If it is not 0 use the command "type C:\boot.ini" No quotes. This will type the file into the command prompt, if it looks like the boot.ini examples posted in this thread it should be OK (no guarantees).

Another option we have put together which should be quite simple for users who find their boot.ini to be missing (and have not yet rebooted) is the following: Download:Windows XP ( http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" ) OR Windows 2000 ( http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini) + Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini. + Remember to hit "Apply" before exiting the tool, as this will save the new settings. Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool. |

Ok A lot of this is really good info guys BUT
It is totally useless to the person who
1. Already shutdown their computer
2. Doesn't read the forums (See #1)
3. Is a average computer user (See #1-2)
^^ these 3 reasons will cause many many people to wake up tomorrow boot up their computers and not be able to. They will then go WTF?? And some will have family/friends who are computer savvy who will come fix their computers for them
There is also a large group who will take their computers down to a shop to have it fixed.
How this was allowed to happen is beyond me, While i am not advocating CCP Do a mass reimbursement , Explanations and apologies for this huge screwup is something they better do.
Chalk up another black mark CCP ..
Edit.. BTW.. How is a noob suposed to fix their computer etc if they cant even boot their system :P (Basicaly my point of this post)

I have sp2 and it effected me, are you sure you weren't installing the full client or something?
I'm 100% sure... I deliberately tried this on a separate machine (we have over a half dozen working Pc's in my household... go figure right?) and it worked fine. XP SP 2 does NOT allow the deletion of the boot.ini file. And even if it is deleted, it stores a backup that it will load instead.

It's true that if your boot drive is 0:0/0, Windows will automatically attempt to boot it, even if no boot.ini is present. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of? Alternately, if you're installing Eve as a non-Administrator user, obviously, you won't be able to mess about with the boot.ini file. Lastly, one might easily imagine that other software (antivirus, performance-tuner apps, etc.) might monitor boot.ini or replace it should it become damaged. However, I'm on XP SP2, all the latest patches, and I definitely got hit with this. So, even if your computer is magically more awesome than everyone else's, please stop spreading information that, by and large, even if not in your particular case, is incorrect. --P |

I hope this helps, I'm not sure how many Boot Camp users there are out there. This is also exactly like the Dell boot.ini, but with partition 3 instead of 2. |

Hi,
I have let the client do the auto patch (classic) for my OS which is Windows XP Pro 64bit
Does it affect this OS?
My boot ini is as follows after the patch..

speedo > You are not effected if you only did the autopatch.
If you downloaded and applied the Premium content then you could be effected.
But as you have a boot.ini then I would say you are not affected.

Everyone can *rabble rabble* about this as much as they please, and throw stones at CCP, but knowing how simple it is to make a pathname error in few lines (or a single line) of code from having done it many times myself, I can only empathize with the dev team. I'm not saying that diminishes the consequences of the mistake, but I'm also not prepared to bite off CCP's collective head over the matter.
Get the word out to your fellow players. Let's be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. I'm sure there's enough frustration around the CCP office right now without us bludgeoning them with our forum clubs. |

FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT RESTARTED THEIR WINDOWS XP SYSTEMS YET:
I have reproduced this issue twice now on my computer. I am running Windows XP Pro. I ran the System Restore program and restored to a previous time/date before the new eve patch was downloaded. The reason I did this is because the System Restore program saves a version of boot.ini when it created a restore point. When you run the restore program, it replaces or in this case puts the boot.ini back into place.

* There were rare cases of people being unable to load their client after the 2.3 patch. The cause of this has been resolved.
* Several fixes relating to the display of messages in multiple languages have been made.
* Several obsolete dlls have been removed from the client. Note that there is a small possibility that your client will report as having incorrect files in the /bin/ directory as a result of this. If this occurs, please remove the files named.
* Removing of Boot.ini from systems running XP as part of the "Need for Speed" upgrade. |
