Edited by: CrayC on 12/12/2008 09:24:48 I believe they said at FanFest that the box version of EVE will also contain the March expansion data. That's all there is to it.

you've got it all wrong. Whenever you buy eve you buy all of it's expasnsions. You also buy all future expansions. SO if you were to buy eve in 2 years, by buying the same boxed version that you could buy on the 10th. you'd be buying that years expansion too.
and so on, forever. The current expansion just IS what game eve is currently. DOn't think of eve like any other mmorpg, because it's not. |

in that case the game is free! and the same as guild wars, awesome. "want to buy borked logic" SO if it did cosr 20$ to buy each expansion as it came out then what would the current model be called? would peole whine that they wanted free expansions back? but wait they neer were free. So wether or not we pay for them we have to pay so honestly CCP should just make you fork out 20$ or each expasion. That's right, if you think it's not free, you should have to pay 20$ of each expansion, have fun in your own personal hell! oh and because eves expansions are everywhere, if you don't pay, then you don't get to log in! awesome! |

yes you do pay for the expansions. you pay every month. Some mmorpgs charge you 10 dollars a month, then hit you for an extra 50 dollars every year for an expansion. Yearly cost 170 dollars Eve charges you 15 dollars a month, then trumpet "free expansions" which idiots get excited about. yearly cost 180 dollars Net result using both models is you have paid the same amount ish. Also net result is stupid people think they are getting some sort of deal. SKUNK |

When new expansion comes: 1. Press the EVE icon on your desktop 2. Watch as the patcher asks you if you want to download the latest patch. 3. Accept. 4. Patch. 5. Enjoy the game.
Or download the entire new build free from the EVE site.
Who buys this game in stores anyway? Never figured why anyone would buy this from dl services like gamersgate and other sites like it. |

On the Fanfest, CCP announced, that they will release a boxed version of EvE, - as many people only look the shelfs in the shops. Atari will be doing the production, distribution of the product. The boxed version will be the same, what you can download from the site.
Probably it will contain a 30/60 day GTC for playing. |

other mmorpgs can't expand the game because each expansion has to be seperate and only for the people that pay for them. Also no game charges 10 a month, they charge 50$ ro buy the game, then 15 a month, and then 50$ a year for each expansion. I'll do it for you. Other mmorpgs are like wh*res, they charge hourly and then temp you with something more but not before you pay them a big amount of money to see it. |

What is relevant is the FACT that your monthly subscription is part paying the wages of people who are developing future expansions. Without the need to provide expansions in this game to keep people interested - these staff would not be needed, and the monthly subscription fee could be reduced to cover basicaly gms and techs only. So we have a game with no expansions costing (for example) 4 dollars a month. Or a game with 'Free Expansions' costing 15 dollars a month (again for example). YOU PAY FOR YOUR FREE EXPANSIONS EVERY MONTH - THEY ARE NOT FREE. Skunk |

I understard the concept of "Free Expansion" or "Your already paying for it via monthly sub" What that article suggested, and it could be me misreading or bad writting. The fact that WoW expansions are not free, and you do not need them to continue playing the game (as you get lvl capped) then CCP can introduce the same sorta thing (with some other cap) Oh and this is just a theory, currently there are no caps in eve, it can be introduced. |

Some of us see it as FREE in the way that for many other games you have to pay your normal monthly fee, which is in line with the mmo market, so we can assume it covers the monthly salaries of the devs working on the future expansion, but still when the expansion is released online and/or in shops we have to pay (extra) to get it. From this POV the EvE Online expansions are free. edit: @op I do not think we will ever pay for an EvE Online expansion (except for what we pay each month) |

Irrelevant comparison. You might as well say the same to prove the opposite point: We have a game with no expansions costing (for example) 15 dollars a month. Or a game with 'Free Expansions' costing 15 dollars a month (again for example). The expansions are part of the package — you pay nothing extra for them. They are, for all intents and purposes, free. |

ZOMG Oveur said that u pay for each expansion with your monthly fee at fanfest in the dev panel...
Now relax take a breath and listen.... eve has never been a split system every expansion isn't just free it's mandatory, everyone plays on the same server with the same features and the same mechanics (cept POS Sploiters srry had to...)
So, EVE will never have pay for expansion style as others do because their architecture demands everyone be on the same page at the same time. Sure they could mod it to make that a possibility in the future, but thus far they have never pointed themselves in that direction and have said that every expansion will be at no extra cost because you pay your subscription, which in turn buys u the next expansion.
So quit fighting about it, the new one is in a box, that people at walmart will pay for, and will most likely come with some game time. Atari makes some money for distributing/publishing and ccp gets some from subscriptions. Done. |

Especially now that the £ is almost level with the €. I re-subbed yesterday and it cost me nearly £14. Also, it would be great to hear from a dev regarding whether we have to pay for the expansion or not, rather than having to read through everyone's speculations. |

EVE costs 131$ a year "ALL INCLUSIVE", period. Wether expansions are free or are a percentage of the subscription is a moot point.
P.S. Of course, you can choose to pay over 200$ per year for it if you want (GTC instead of CC//DC), but that's another story.
