npc changes on the test server
reported by CCP TomB | 2005.11.15 14:31:35
There have been a number of changes and improvements made to the NPC system which can be tested in a semi-primitive state on the Test Server. It's expected that some bugs and imbalance will be found, when they are found and reported, we'll drag 'em out back and shoot 'em.

Player testing and feedback is highly desired, we urge anyone who has a little free time or currently being camped to test these changes and leave feedback. It will help us finding bugs or imbalances, if there are any to be found.

NPC Distribution Mechanic
We have made a new deployment mechanic of NPC Pirates in Asteroid Belts, which will make it easier to add new NPC types in the future and modifying existing deployment logics. So it's possible that some misplacement of NPCs has occured.

NPC Names
New NPCs need names, but instead of just creating new ones, we have changed the existing names around and traded a few. The naming will be used to continue a ranking system based on normal/elite/commander NPC types. All the name changes and the complete "rank listing" are listed in this post.

NPC Amount
Big ships in asteroid belts now spawn more frequently and in bigger numbers than before. As a result, the number of smaller support ships have been decreased some what (i.e. instead of 1-2 battleships & 4-6 cruisers you might find 2-3 battleships and 2-3 cruisers).

Warp Scramble Warning
Interceptor NPCs with warp scramblers have invaded Empire Space, they will now be seen in asteroid belts in up to 0.3 security.

Cap Drain the NPC
Capacitor Draining and Neutralizing NPCs will result in reduced shield boosting / armor repairing. Size matters here: a heavy nosferatu will affect frigate NPCs a lot more than battleship NPCs, while a small nosferatu won't do much to battleship NPCs.
*This is currently not functional on the Test Server*

Loot Tables
Loot Tables are getting some love; removing crappy items from elite NPCs (such as basic damage control and small shield boosters from Battleship NPCs). It's still in the works however and is estimated to come to the Test Server at the end of this week or the start of next week.

Remote Repairing/Boosting
Skipped/Dropped/Kaput: Remote Repairing/Boosting was listed as a feature for NPCs but won't get out in the upcoming patch.

Deadspace Complexes & Missions
Changes have also been made to existing NPCs in deadspace complexes and missions. The existing complexes and missions won't be getting a complete overhaul in Red Moon Rising. Unfortunately, we simply don't have the testing man power to get this accimplished before RMR deployment. But I promise that we will be updating them with new NPCs and tuning of amount and strengths of existing NPCs before Kali.

New Ship Types
We've have added the following NPCs:
  • 6 New Destroyers: deal high frigate based damage but have low defence, are also bigger and easier to track than frigates. These will be seen in 0.4 security asteroid belts and below.
  • 6 New BattleCruisers: deal better damage than cruisers and have much better defences. These will be seen in 0.3 security asteroid belts and below.

  • 6 New Elite Frigates: two of the new frigates are support based (EW) and the other four are assault based (good defence). These will be seen in seen in non-Empire Space asteroid belts.

  • 8 New Elite Cruisers: four of these are support based (EW) and other four are assault based (good defence). These will be seen in non-Empire Space asteroid belts.

  • 2x New Cruisers: two cruisers have been added to the usual eight spawning in asteroid belts.

  • 6x New Battleships: six battleships have been added to the usual four found in asteroid belts, the existing four battleships have been changed somewhat to maintain continuity with their new gang mates.

  • A whole lot of Commanders: Commander types (rare spawn Dread Guristas etc.) have been added for all the new NPC types, excluding the elite versions.

  • Angel Cartel
  • Damage Types: Angel Cartel are now focusing more on explosive/kinetic damage with turrets, few are still able to deal thermal and em damage but not as much as currently on TQ.

  • Defense: shield boost/armor repair rate per second for Angel Cartel has been reduced compared to the other factions, reason is the varying damage types they have, which will stay.

  • Missiles: all Angel Cartel will now only be shooting explosive damage missiles.

  • Velocity: for all factions has been tuned a bit, Angel Cartel have the highest velocity of all factions.

  • Target Painters: 2x frigates, 2x elite frigates, 2x cruisers, 2x elite cruisers and 2x battleships now have a chance of using target painters.

  • Stasis Webify: 2x cruisers and 2x elite cruisers now have a chance to use stasis webifier (besides the "Interceptor" style elite frigates).

  • Blood Raiders
  • Tracking Disruption: 2x frigates, 2x elite frigates, 2x cruisers and 2x elite cruisers now have a chance to use tracking disruption.

  • Capacitor Drain: 2x cruisers, 4x elite cruisers and 2x battleships now have a chance to use capacitor drain.

  • Guristas
  • Resistance: secondary weakest resistance changed, they used to be most resistant to thermal damage but was causing problem for Caldari based turret boats. Thermal is now their second weakest damage type.

  • Target Jamming: 2x frigates, 2x elite frigates, 4x cruisers, 4x elite cruisers and 2x battleships now have a chance to ecm target jamming. The strengths are in this order: Magnetometric > Radar > Ladar > Gravimetric, or in race ship: Gallente > Minmatar > Amarr > Caldari.

  • Turrets: various Guristas ships have been changed into turret boats only, while others have been given more turret power with less missiles. Pure missile boats still exist.

  • Sansha's Nation
  • Tracking Disruption: 2x frigates, 2x elite frigates, 4x cruisers, 4x elite cruisers and 2x battleships now have a chance to use tracking disruption.

  • Missiles: Sansha's rats have been given more of missile fire power to fit better with their factionality (amarr/caldari), but far from being as missile focused as Guristas are.

  • Serpentis
  • Resistance: secondary weakest resistance changed, they used to be most resistant to kinetic damage but was causing problem for Gallente based turret boats. Kinetic is now their second most weakest damage type.

  • Sensor Dampen: 2x frigates, 2x elite frigates, 4x cruisers, 4x elite cruisers and 2x battleships now have a chance to use sensor dampen.

  • Defenders: usage of defenders for all Serpentis/Guardian has been increased.

I seriously hope that the tracking disruption for Blood Raiders isnt as disabling as the player-use modules, if so its going to be nearly impossible to kill them (combined with drone changes).

    Cap draining Blood Raiders? Woah!

Noticed some changes while I was toying with lvl4 missions and sentry drones in Sisi. Most relevant conclusion is Guardian Veterans (serpentis deadspace inties) are completely broken. They go at less than 130 m/s, do not MWD and do not shoot/web (didn't notice a scramble either). They are also impossible to kill with heavy drones (I was using 5 Ogres I with Interfacing V and Gall Bship V),even when I had them doing 12 m/s (web). In the end I had to kill them all with my 250mm railguns. Will test some more and file a BR.
The strengths are in this order: Magnetometric > Radar > Ladar > Gravimetric, or in race ship: Gallente > Minmatar > Amarr > Caldari.
Shouldn't that be Gallente > Amarr > Minmatar > Caldari ? (ladar is minnie, radar amarr) Excellent changes though, looking forward to the new spawns!

Any changes to the bounty amount or for that matter, the new bounties for the new ships.
Christopher Scott on 16 November 2005
Considering that Caldari favor Amarr over Minmitar, their strongest jamming strengths should be against Gallente and Minmitar. Then again, The Guristas are meant to hate Caldari faction most of all, being that their leaders are ex-military and try to pirate/sabotage the Caldari regularly. But whatever. :-D

"Defenders: usage of defenders for all Serpentis/Guardian has been increased" While you're in digging at the missile code - could player defenders be looked at again? With the increased missile speed they're pretty worthless ATM.
    Hippey on 16 November 2005
Is the loot table of the angels going to be fixed/? they were and still will be the hardest NPC to kill. Especially since they seem to be the only ones that will be webifiying with rats higher then interceptors. As such, isn't it FINALLY time to make the loot table of angels better then others?
    sidthesexist on 16 November 2005
you have said you are removing crappy loot from the loot tables but are you adding anything? or is this just a nerf (all refinable loot is handy in 0.0?)

sid said: "you have said you are removing crappy loot from the loot tables but are you adding anything? or is this just a nerf (all refinable loot is handy in 0.0?)"

It means that instead of crappy loot dropping you will be getting more of the juicy loot -> large shield booster instead of a small shield booster from a battleship rat = more ISK for you
    dutchfighter on 16 November 2005
so guristas will become very strong against gal ships. Me looking at my skillz and flying a mega against guristas (missions). I feel like sh*t now. thank you from the buttom of my heart. NOT Why do they have to have different strenghts against different races. Why not just one strenght against all races. If you look at the mission site of most lvl 4's. You see a large variaty of ships. Maybe less minnie's, but apoc, ravens and mega's are all there in equal ammount. So does this mean a raven is a must to run mission for caldari agents (mostly guristas npc's). Doesn't seem fair to me. That people that can only fly gal/amarr and have over several SP in their gunnery are now forced to train up another race or do lvl 1 mission again at another empire faction. Which will only be amarr. Cause the standing for the gal/minnie faction is bad (story lines). Also out in the north there will surely be people that can't fly a raven and have some rat hunting besides there pvp as profitable busniss. Should these people also be training for things they don't want to? Or should they leave their alliance/corp. Cause they can't make a good profit anymore?

That is not all the true. The more loot would lower the prices for this loot. So more is not always better. :D As you may know ratting in 0.0 is a joke right now. Are you going make so that a single intercepter can't take down a battleship and it's wing of escort frigates or crusiers, like you can now?

As much as I hate the new changes to npc's allowing them to use mods such as ecm and what not, the one thing they should not be allowed to do is cap drain. NPCs should be hindered in at least small ways, and as players we should be able to defend against there actions. The reason most people npc is because is safer and easier to defend against. Allowing them to cap drain would totally negate all of this.

That's kinda bugged lol. Think he made a bug report not shure thaugh. That ciminal flagging for npc engagements does that open up yourself to be kill podded in empire without sec loss or being concorded? I tryed to get someone to test this on the test server but everybody down there seems more interested in blowing dreadnaughts then testing this. :(
Damien Vox on 17 November 2005
I have one question that worries me about the target jamming NPC's but beyond that the changes are awesome: Are you going to code in the lock range of NPC's? The frigates and cruisers lock you at up to like 150km sometimes. Not even our best cruisers with skills at 5 can do that without serious help and it seems like every cruiser can do that. Are we going to see this changed?
    turnschuh on 17 November 2005

Would it be possible to have posted the order of damage that each faction is highest to lowest resistance in? For now and for after the changes, so that we can directly see how it will effect our current setups... Not asking for an exact resistance, just the order of best to worst. (But the exact resistances would be wonderfull too :) )

Talia Windheart on 18 November 2005
To clarify.. these rats are to be killed thats where they are here... if u give them the ability to target jam u cannot do anything against that and if u get warp scrambled your double sscrewed and i don't play on a time zone with a lot of other players so your takeing something itook a year to get good and remove it so really its like here GO PVP with some NPC's and u will most likely die unless your in a raven with max fof skills.. have a nice day... very dumb poorly thought out.. i dunno where u get your info but its not form the masses that acuttly play the game.. jamming and tracking disruption make rats damn near unkillable and u shouldn't need 10 friends to kill 1 bs rat a few cruisers.. and if u make it that way u will only piss a lot of people off

    MWEI on 19 November 2005
Wonder about the target jamming of Guristas What if you are target jamed in a belt with warp scrambling frigates, you are basically dead as theres nothing you do: You cant warp away because you are scrambled You cant target the scrambler because you are jamed. Although its already been employed in pvp, because its chance based theres bound to be a case of this happening sooner or later, losing a ship to pvp because of EW is one thing, but being jamed + scrambled by a bunch of 0.2 belt rat and lose that battleship with nothing you can do about it dosnt seems right.
Claude Leon on 19 November 2005

Just an idea - have NPCs follow same mechanic rules as PCs, with slots and modules fitted, skills used, drones, etc. Then generate loot the same way PCs generate loot, from leftover modules and cargo actually fitted to ship. No more endless cap, infinite ammo crap. Generate stats the same way PCs generate stats. If this makes rats too weak, adjust their ship stats or give them better modules, or awesome skills. Yes, it is a lot of work to convert all NPCs to work exactly like PCS, but PC system already exists and works. Benefits: 1. Loot tables are in sync with actual equipment NPCs carry. No need to get creative with this as the more powerful rats will automatically have better loot as they use better modules. 2. System is self-balancing against PCs as rats work in same way. No more 150km locking frigates, random and unpredictable weapons and EW from rats. PCs still have a small advantage as NPC AI is, well, dumb. This is fine IMHO - NPC rats have numbers on their side, and they keep coming. 3. PCs have established relative strengths of ships and good setups in countless PvP engagements. Ask people who do this every day to tell you what is a fair fight and what is not a fair fight with new rats. Use this pre-existing knowledge instead of making random guesses on what NPCs are appropriate for what level players. 4. This will make ship scanners an actual useful module with significant tactics attached to them instead of an afterthought. Players might actually just into a belt to scan the opposition to see what they're packing. Right now, what most people do is check online rats database to know what rats do. More uncertainty would be good, preventing one-sided setups from being so effective.

Done some NPCing in Branch against guristas. They have thermal missiles now, very frequent jamming (and I was in a Raven), most bs do not drop cans, bc have no icon. Guristas doing thermal dmg mostly makes things more difficult for Caldari also. New spawns content is...challenging. Overall these are interesting changes. And ...umm further enhance teamwork.
    George X on 20 November 2005
Also, I dont quite understand how changing secondary resistance for Guristas is for helping caldari turretboats... I think it helps Gallente and Amarr mainly. I have yet to see Caldari "turretboats" do npcing in 0.0 :)

I'm having some serious nightmares bout this, until you guys fix the total imbalance in weapons and the frigate problem. Ya can't hit em with missiles ya can't hit em with even scout drones, ya just can't hit em. Same goes for Player frigs too, the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, and you can see the results clearly with all the frig fleets floating around. What concerns me is the overall makeup of AI mobs, they should be appropriate to the area they are in in makeup of ship class v the most expected player class of ship for the region. Otherwise you get the problem with players being forced to hunt in Bs's for instance and being utterly unable to do much about the frigates. Careful attention and great caution needed here.

BTW, regarding all the comments complaining about the difficulties imposed by NPC EW usage...it's about time! I love a good role-based squad, and NPCs have been such a disappointing target. If a BS can't hit frigs, have an AF along for the ride. And/or an armour-tanked jamming BC. Damn, don't you see the increased difficulty makes PVE interesting again? :))

Just curious if anyone is going to mine at all with the new NPC rules. I mean with your ship outfitted with mining lasers you have only tanking or drones to combat with. Both seem to be nerfed in this patch. And, I am just wondering how the new manufacturing rules that you are implementing will be used if no one mines any minerals because they keep losing ships to NPC's. New rules are great and I am all for enhancing the game but NPC's already warp scramble you which is effective enough. Cap draining and target jamming is not needed. Also, I have heard that NPC's will change their targets periodically instead of the way it is now with locking on a ship and continuing to fire on that ship until it can't anymore. Without that eternal lock haulers will be killed by the thousands further decreasing the amount of miners out there to supply the manufacturing. The end result will be very little manufacturing and not the huge increase in manufacturing that you are trying to imply. Am I wrong here ?

Seems like pvp will be so much easier than pve, if it isnt so already. Guess online games=impossible 4 solo players, and on easy mode for people with alot of friends. If this turns out as bad as I can imagine, then I guess trading is the only way you can make isk in the game riskfree(since solo miners are pretty much fucked if scambled and jammed in caldari space). Not that I care much for those two things. Think CCP have gotten something hard in the head... Keep nerfing players and keep making the npcs harder and harder... \o/... Not that you care really. /me speculates turning into a pirate coz camping gates so is much fun, and that must be so easy now, when haulers cant really use their bms... That sounds like easy isk.

i would also like to see the stats on the CALDARI CASTERATION DRONE, i have felt the sting but havent seen the stats
    FreaKsh0 on 10 December 2005
Angel Cartel are now focusing more on explosive/kinetic damage with turrets, few are still able to deal thermal and em damage but not as much as currently on TQ. shield boost/armor repair rate per second for Angel Cartel has been reduced compared to the other factions, reason is the varying damage types they have, which will stay. seems a bit of a contradiction? or typo?

MMORG yes but still the solo player pays the bill! but im just here for the ride, i hope it runs smooth.

I see alot of good changes in this. I see a couple I'm not to thrilled with but hey. Whatever right. It's a little something for almost everyone.. except for talia apparently with her OMG WTF the devs are doing this just to piss me off attitude. I don't think they're taking soloability away from the game as some people have feared. Just making it a little harder- for ex. I doubt you'll see many more thoraxes out in 0.0 soloing bs spawns. It just means the people who wanna solo are gonna have to use their brain instead of just one giant kill button when ratting.

Some Nice Changes Comming. Keep It Up CCP :)

No one's commenting on the protection of jetti caps. Like isn't that the point of having lock caps anyways to prevent stealing. CCP is just responding to complaints by ebaying farmers that it isn't easy enough for them to sit in .9 in an apoc and strip mine.
Cade Morrigan on 14 December 2005
Ditto up there, PLEASE enable MWDs in deadspace if the npcs are getting all these new capabilities. Remember something CCP... as I wander space in EVE, i find -many- people soloing as they play. I'd wager that the majority of the people playing at any given time are -not- grouped up but working solo. If you make that more difficult to any degree, you are going to piss off a lot of customers.
    mingmerc on 15 December 2005
We are out in space wandering throughout the cosmos, and we never meet any aliens,Alien weapons?, alien ships?, now wheres the harm in that....lol
    mingmerc on 15 December 2005
I think maybe its time ccp did somthing about the way in which payment for is is done, here in poor old uk, we dont have the top three credit cards, n we r not allowed to use direct-debit, and whilst i dont mind paying for eve ( cos it is sooo good) i dont see why we sgould have to pay the extra tenner to western union so that we here in britain can play the game, its as if we get penalised for being in the wrong part of the world, c,mon guys ure costing me more isk....
    Dead Angel1166 on 15 December 2005
Whit all this new stuff evry PVPER wil be stronger woaw nobody wil survive now :( :P
Grim Starwind on 15 December 2005
True true, I'd like to use my debit card to pay to play eve. And anyway.. as for the updates. It sounds good, since I don't really solo NPC anyway, because I have what is called in game friends and corp members to do that with. Which is why I pay for an MMORPG to play a game with other people. Either that or I'd play a single player game which you don't pay monthly for. Simple, if you solo why spend money on an MMORPG? Stop moaning and play the game people, everyoen seems to think that the changed only effect them, but they effect everyone so get it up ye! As for all the people complaining about NPC using EW.. why don't you just put the modules on that counter the EW? Wouldn't that be a good idea... ? Anywho, creep it real people and em... stuff I guess :S =D
Myal Terego on 15 December 2005
I sure hope i can still use my apoc to rat solo in catch heh.

We will have to see if the Standard Ships are even useable in the new 0.4->0.0 space. And if it had become a Privaye playground fr the exsisting mega corps. Time will tell.

Ive been playing with the jammner and damper npcs. So far i havent met one of those spawns yet that tries to scramble at the same time. so you can get away if you have to but lets face it surely you should be able to tank them long enough to put the boot in so I dont see it makes alot of difference. Fit backup arrays if you dont like being jammed. 0.0 npcs just got a bit more interesting but they also make you alot more isk $_$
Galen Silas on 16 December 2005
Yea before i read this i definately noticed that there were new ships when an Angel legionnare blew up two of my ships, along with his other little buddies, but no worries. Great stuff. :)

Would be nice, if it wasn't so difficult (Training vise) to change from a Mining character, to a Hunter - And vice versa
