What is Project Discovery?
Developed in collaboration with Swiss start-up Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), Project Discovery is a unique mini-game that is quick, easy, and rewarding to play, with the substantial benefit of advancing real science.
Capsuleers have already contributed in a significant way to the research into exoplanets and COVID-19, and the scope of Project Discovery has expanded to include critical immune system diseases, including cancer.
This initiative has been recognized globally, winning the Webby People’s Voice Award for contributing to science and society. This collaboration between EVE players and the scientific community exemplifies the potential of virtual worlds to contribute to our understanding of the real one.
The science behind Project Discovery
The latest iteration of Project Discovery focuses on a new frontier: cancer research. Through the innovative use of flow cytometry simulators, capsuleers will contribute to understanding critical immune system diseases, including cancer. You will analyze data produced by flow cytometers.
By using a tracing tool to draw polygons around clusters of cells, you will help analyze crucial cancer-related data and help train AI models to provide results with a similar level of accuracy. This effort will support scientists in decoding how our immune systems interact with and combat cancer, paving the way for potential breakthroughs in treatment and understanding.
How to Participate
New players will go through character creation and the EVE Online tutorial. When they’ve finished learning the ropes, they can access Project Discovery through the Neocom menu and participate by clicking on the double helix logo. There they will be greeted by Dr Andrea Cossarizza, Professor of Immunology at the University of Caille.

The story of Project Discovery continues
Project Discovery is overseen by CONCORD and continues its journey of scientific discovery by embarking a major program of understanding the body’s response to cancer and other immune system diseases and is calling on Capsuleers to assist in analyzing the data produced.
