'Phishing' alert!

2005-09-03 - 작성자 Svarthol

Dear players.

It has come to our attention that some dishonest person is waging a 'phishing' campaign against our subscribers, by sending them a false email claiming to be working for EVE Online and asking for their account information. Many players have reported receiving the following email:

_'We are contacting you because on 1 Sep 2005 our Account Review Team identified some unusual activity in your account. In accordance with Eve's User Agreement and to ensure that your account has not been compromised, access to your account was limited. Your account access will remain limited until this issue has been resolved.

To secure your account and quickly restore full access, we may require some additional information from you for the following reason

This process is mandatory, and if not completed within the nearest time your account may be subject for suspension or will be banned

To securely confirm your Eve-Online information please click on the link bellow:

We encourage you to log in and perform the steps necessary to restore your account access as soon as possible. Allowing your account access to remain limited for an extended period of time may result in further limitations on the use of your account and possible account closure.

Thank you for using Eve-online! The Eve Team'_

Remember, DO NOT input your account details anywhere but on the official website and in the game client. In this case, the perpetrator had used our URL, but embedded his own in the link. Clever, but not clever enough to use a spell checker or write a coherent email. Nor was he clever enough to cover his tracks particularly well. We have all the relevant information about this person and will be contacting his ISP as well as the legal authorities about this matter.

Be aware that we would never have any reason to ask for anything similar to this. This is typical of 'phishing' scams, where the scammer tries to think of any 'official' sounding reason to get people to comply with his request. Remember, we will NEVER ask for your account details.

We would like to ask you to not post your email addresses on our forums, since it enables dishonest people to target you with this type of communication. Be careful with your personal information and remember that your account security is your own responsibility.

If you ever are in doubt as to whether an email originates from us or not, please contact customer support.

All the best,

GM Arkanon
